History
The establishment of the Research Center for Language Teaching and Learning was initiated by its founding Director, Associate Professor Dr. Mark Bedoya Ulla, in response to the School of Languages and General Education’s commitment to strengthening teaching and learning. As faculty members in language education continued to produce high-quality research, it became clear that a formal structure was needed to consolidate these efforts and further enhance pedagogical practices through sustained research engagement and publication. The initial application to establish the center was submitted in 2022 and received official approval in 2024. In October 2024, the university officially authorized the center to operate in alignment with its mission to promote excellence in research.
In line with this mandate, the first International Research Conference on Language Teaching and Learning was successfully held on March 28, 2025. The conference reflected the university’s commitment to advancing research initiatives and academic outputs in education, with particular emphasis on language teaching and learning. Thus, the rationale for establishing the center is grounded in the recognition that language education plays a vital role in developing individuals’ linguistic competence, cultural awareness, and personal growth, while also contributing to broader social and economic development. Within its first year of operation, the center organized several research workshops, and its members received recognition from both local and international sources for their scholarly contributions.
One of the center's central purposes is to promote and support research in language education, particularly in English, Thai, and Chinese instruction. In addition, the center encourages academics, educators, and researchers to explore diverse dimensions of language teaching and learning, including pedagogy, curriculum design, assessment practices, and the integration of technology. This initiative aims to cultivate a strong research culture that directly informs and enhances classroom practice. An important strength of the center lies in its interdisciplinary orientation. Research in language education necessarily engages with the complex relationships among language, culture, cognition, and society. Recognizing this complexity, the center fosters collaboration among scholars in linguistics, psychology, sociology, and education. Such collaboration enriches intellectual exchange, strengthens research quality, and supports innovation in language teaching methodologies.
The center also acknowledges the broader national and global significance of language education research. Language proficiency is fundamental to effective communication in both domestic and international contexts. Through its research on pedagogy, curriculum development, and assessment, the center contributes to preparing learners with the linguistic skills necessary to navigate an increasingly interconnected world. Equally important is the center’s commitment to inclusive and context-responsive language education. It recognizes that teachers and students bring diverse linguistic backgrounds, learning preferences, and cultural experiences into the classroom. By investigating teaching strategies that respond to these differences, the center seeks to advance learner-centered practices that empower teachers and foster meaningful, sustainable learning experiences.
Thus, the Research Center for Language Teaching and Learning responds to an institutional need for focused research and knowledge development in the field of language education. Through its interdisciplinary framework, support for faculty scholarship, and attention to diverse learner needs, the center aims to enhance language teaching practices, contribute to national development, and cultivate a vibrant research culture within the university. Its initiatives and publications aspire to strengthen the quality of language education and, in turn, support broader social and economic progress.
